Celebrate the Fall Harvest
European Style

July 2005
Burgundy, France
Wine aficionados may rejoice, for harvest season is fast approaching. Join Bike Riders' Bicycling in Burgundy trip September 25-October 1, as we view firsthand this yearly rite of passage and bike through the world famous vineyards of the Burgundian countryside. We marvel as the pickers delicately, yet swiftly pick the fruit of century old vines that will one day be made into Grand Crus vintages sought around the world. Other highlights of our trip include a ride through the legendary vineyards of Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. We stop at the celebrated wine villages of Gevery-Chambertin and Nuits-St. Georges where we proceed to the cellars of Morin Père et Fils for a tour and tasting of their fine pinot noirs and chardonnays. Steeped in a history of beauty and distinction, a week biking in Burgundy during harvest is ideal for the wine enthusiast and a vacation to remember.

The Alentejan Plain, Portugal
For those longing for a more Mediterranean flair, opt for Bike Riders' Pedaling the Alentejan Plain bike tour, September 12-17 or October 10-15. The warmth of the fall harvest season brings out the infectious smiles of the Portuguese as well. Portugal, now bursting onto the international wine scene, produces some of the best wines in the Alentejo region. On Bike Riders' tour, Pedaling the Alentejan Plain we visit the Quinto do Carmo, a local winery recently featured in Travel and Leisure. Located just outside the marble rich town of Estremoz, Quinto do Carmo, gives us a behind the scenes view of the intricacies of creating a superb wine as well as a tasting of their superior reds and whites. Other highlights of our week in Portugal include riding through miles of sun-kissed wheat fields speckled with gnarled cork tress and being treated as royalty, as we conclude our week at Rainha Santa Isabel, a magnificent 14th c. castle built by King Dinis I for his wife Queen Isabel.

• Fall Dates: Sept 12-17 and Oct 10-15

Puglia, Italy
While Burgundy and Portugal may be best known for their vineyards, Puglia has a history of its own with its countless olive groves that produce some of the most delicate and flavorsome extra virgin olive oils in the world. Located in the heel of the boot on Italy's southern tip, Puglia's warm Mediterranean climate is ideal for olive oil production, as well as great biking. Ride with Bike Riders on our Wonders of Puglia bike trip October 9-14 or October 16-21. Weave your way through centuries old gnarled olive trees that dot the countryside and along the crystal blue waters of the sultry Adriatic. Fall in Puglia is idyllic, the waters along the coast, ideal for swimming, are still warmed from the summer sun and day time temperatures are comfortable for biking. If you missed your summer vacation, Puglia is a perfect fall destination to soak up some sun before the cold winter sets in.
