Protectors of the Coast The rocky coast lines and historic villages give New England its unique character. And no other structure reflects this character better than the lighthouse. In fact, each day the sun casts its first rays of light in the United States on a lighthouse in Maine. Once an essential piece of the shipping and fishing industries, the lighthouse is now a romantic symbol of the Maine way of life. Home to more than 60 lighthouses, Maine is the destination for travelers eager to discover these majestic structures and the ports and villages they protect.
Maine's Hidden Coast
Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, New Harbor, Maine, featured in the June issue of Yankee Magazine is a dramatic example of the lights of the northeast.
"...the rocky coast of Maine doesn't get any rockier than Pemaquid Point, where the vertical streaks of granite below the lighthouse look like the planet itself shipwrecked on the shore.... If we had to choose one lighthouse to visit, this would be it."
And we agree. The Pemaquid Point Light is one of the highlights of our Maine's Hidden Coast Adventure that takes you through a relatively undiscovered region spanning from East Boothbay to Pemaquid Point.
