Pounding surf, tall pines and the undulating coves of coastal Maine. Just off the beaten path, Boothbay and Pemaquid are the essence of Maine. Tiny coves, timeless New England villages and miles of rugged coastline make up an area still undiscovered by most travelers. Biking along in the crisp salt air, we're greeted by weathered lobster boats and solitary lighthouses protecting the rocky shore.
• Ocean Point and Southport Island
• The pounding surf at Pemaquid Light
• Fresh chowder, steamers, and lobster on the wharf
• Crossing Muscongus Bay on our private cruise
• Riding beneath a canopy of spruce trees along the Back River
Day 1 & 2 East Boothbay & Boothbay Harbor
We trace the shoreline out to Ocean Point, Hendrick's Head Lighthouse and Southport Island before a ride along the tranquil Back River. Visit the Fisherman's Co-op to sample a lobster roll and watch the day's catch being hauled in, or stroll along Boothbay Harbor and browse through its many shops and galleries.

• Two nights at The Five Gables, a pretty inn with pine floors, fireplaces and wrap-around porch.
Day 3, 4 & 5 Newcastle & Pemaquid Point
We cycle to the next peninsula and through the sister villages of Newcastle and Damariscotta, carefully rebuilt after the French & Indian War. Admire the granite cliffs from the lighthouse at Pemaquid Point or explore Ft. William Henry before Captain Wallace guides us through Muscongus Bay aboard his restored lobster boat, Paige Elizabeth. Our farewell dinner is pure New England... a dockside feast of steamers, Atlantic lobster and blueberry ice cream.

The Bradley Inn, a lovely hotel with colorful wildflower gardens, welcomes us for two nights.
"There's also nothing like cresting a hill, gliding down the other side and feeling, cool, sea-scented air rush past you."
